6th Asia-Europe Film Meeting
Phase 1: Asia-Europe Film Seminar, in association with RITS film school, Belgium
(24 January – 25 January 2008)
Phase 2: Asia-Europe Film Meeting, in association with CINEMART Rotterdam
(26-30 January 2008)
A series of annual Asia-Europe Film Meetings were initiated during the Cinemanila
International Film Festival in 2002. Since its inauguration, the series of yearly Asia-Europe Film
Meetings have tackled issues related to the development and promotion of independent
cinema in both regions (film distribution, film producing, women film makers, etc.) Concrete
outputs take the forms of development of film projects, career opportunities for young film
professionals, implementation of new film funds etc.
In 2008 the Asia-Europe Foundation continues its support to develop links of collaboration
between the independent film industries of both regions. In partnership with the RITS film
school Brussels and CINEMART Rotterdam, and with a focus on young Asia-Europe
independent film producers, it hopes of continuing to build new inroads to promote
awareness, mutual understanding and dialogue on issues of common interest to Asia and
Europe.
The Asia-Europe Film Meeting will have two phases in 2008. The first one will be happening in
Brussels, Belgium, on 24-25 January, with in a seminar form containing workshops, panel
discussion and screenings and will try to go further in the necessary debate on independent
films in Asia and Europe. Links with the students of the Flemish school of film RITS will be
developed aiming to connect both film schools and film professionals
The second phase of the Asia-Europe Film Meeting will be integrated into the broader
programme within CINEMART called ‘The Rotterdam lab’ where producers from all over the
world meet and discuss future co-productions or partnerships. Sessions with focus on
production, marketing or distribution will be part of the programme as well as speed-dating
sessions and
Through these workshops, networks of producers engaged in the Asian and European film
medium will be fostered. An exchange and sharing of information for film co-production
opportunities between Asia and Europe will be facilitated through the discussion of selected
film projects.
CONCEPT PAPER
Phase 1: Asia-Europe Film Seminar: In Phase 1 (24–25 January 2008, Brussels, Belgium) a
team consisting of 20 young film producers from Asia and Europe will meet at the RITS film
school facilities and will engage in a series of workshops, screenings and panels discussion on
Asia-Europe independent film issues. These sessions will debate and explore the potential
interest of other future Asia-Europe initiatives in this field to help improve the level and
number of exchanges between both regions of the world.
Phase 2: Asia-Europe Film Meeting, In Phase 2 (26-31 January 2008, Rotterdam, The
Netherlands), the selected participants who will have taken part in the RITS workshop will join
together with other young and emerging producers to take part in the Rotterdam Lab at
Cinemart for a period of 5 days. A series of discussions will take on a comprehensive range of
film issues covering production, sales, financing, distribution, press & promotion and
television. Sessions of speed-dating will be also organised to offer the participants the
opportunity for more in-depth discussions with industry delegates and to talk more personally
about their projects.

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) seeks to promote better mutual understanding and closer
cooperation between the people of Asia and Europe through greater intellectual, cultural, and peopleto-
people exchanges. These exchanges include conferences, lecture tours, workshops, seminars and
the use of web-based platforms. The major achievement of ASEF is the establishment of permanent
bi-regional networks focused on areas and issues that help to strengthen Asia-Europe relations.
Established in February 1997 by the partners of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), ASEF is the only permanent
physical institution of the ASEM process. ASEF works in partnership with other public institutions and civil society
actors to ensure its work is broad-based and balanced among the partner countries. http://www.asef.org

The International Film Festival Rotterdam offers a quality selection of worldwide independent,
innovative and experimental cinema and visual arts. Devoted to offering a platform to and actively
supporting independent filmmaking from around the globe, The International Film Festival
Rotterdam is the essential hub for discovering film talent and for catching the early buzz on many world and international
premieres. During twelve festival days, hundreds of filmmakers and other artists present their work to a large and devoted
audience in 24 screening venues located within central Rotterdam. Up to 3,000 press and film industry representatives visit the
festival to report on its buzz or to take part in CineMart, the largest co-production market for film projects.
CineMart was the first platform of its kind to offer filmmakers the opportunity to launch their ideas to the international film
industry and to find the right connections to get their projects financed. Launching around 45 new projects that are looking for
additional financing, CineMart also signals an important start to the 'film year'. Every year, the CineMart invites a select number of
directors and/or producers to present their film projects to potential co-producers, bankers, funds, sales agents, distributors, TV
stations and other potential financiers and information sources. It offers highly productive opportunities to network and discuss

projects. In order to maintain the effective but informal atmosphere which is one of the main trademarks of CineMart, the
selection of projects is kept to approximately 45 and the invitation process is selective.
The Rotterdam Lab is a 5-day training workshop for young and emerging producers designed to build up their international
network and their experience at an international festival and market. Participation in the Rotterdam Lab provides young producers
with the confidence and skills to navigate the festival circuit and meet the professionals who can help finance their projects. For
